The reason for the strange lull as Nevarra teetered on the edge of civil war revealed: the Pentaghasts and the Van Markhams had been secretly attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution to their conflict. In Harvestmere 9:45, something finally happened.

Still, the possibility loomed over the country through the rest of 9:44 and 9:45 as well, with both sides circling each other warily while seemingly waiting for King Markus to finally die. The Van Markhams quit the capital for their estate and gathered an army of their supporters, but their moves to actually starting the civil war they threaten were limited and tentative. Internal politics have been further unsettled by new evidence of decades-old treason that in mid-9:44 led to the execution of Caius Van Markham, one of Nevarra's elder statesmen and the patriarch of the Van Markham family (perennial rivals of the Pentaghast dynasty and a former royal house to boot). His niece, Aurelia Pentaghast, has risen to the fore, but has not yet solidified support for her claim, with some still clinging to Ferdinand as the more-traditional heir and others seemingly wondering if perhaps it's time for greater change. Now old and childless, he will be be succeeded by his also-old younger brother- Ferdinand the apolitical dragon hunter-unless another potential heir makes a move first, and the jockeying for position has reached a dangerous tipping point as the king's health fails. King Markus Pentaghast's reign has been stable to the point of boring, until recently. Nevarran mages are likely the best-trained outside of Tevinter, and the secretive magical order called the Mortalitasi have been accused of being the true power behind the throne. It's also one of the few places where mages wield political power, due to Nevarrans' unique beliefs regarding death and spirits. Nevarra is a wealthy nation home to a strong aristocracy, a significant merchant class, and led by a sprawling dynasty of former dragon hunters.
